One Family's Experience with Autism. This up-close account of Luke, 14, and his family at home in suburban Washington, D.C. chronicles his daily activities, following him into his middle school classroom and on a visit to his doctor. Those close to Luke share candid insights into Luke's behavior and their relationships with him.
Luke was diagnosed at age two. His psychiatrist for the past eight years, Dr. C.T. Gordon of the the University of Maryland, places him at about the middle of the autism spectrum. Communication is still difficult for Luke and though an eager student, like four of five persons with autism he is also mentally retarded.
Rather than dwelling on the strain and discord a child with autism can cause in any family, "The Story of Luke" reflects the spirit of love and optimism that has serves to bind the members of Luke's family and community together in his support. 27 min DVD was Produced, Directed and Written by Howie Lane
